I should be out celebrating my friend’s birthday in Farringdon tonight but yesterday morning I accidentally kicked a kitchen cupboard so hard that I can barely walk. I think my toe might be broken but surely it would hurt even more if that were true and the swelling would be worse. The only good news is that it’s on my left leg which is the one that I’ve been having problems with since I was diagnosed.
It’s especially annoying as I could really use a drink right now but it’s Friday the 13th and if there’s a chance I’m going to fall down an escalator while travelling on the tube, today’s the day. So I bottled it and stayed at home.
My journey via tube to St Thomas’ hospital on Tuesday was easier than I anticipated and had bolstered my confidence. A girl offered me her seat on the return journey which was during rush hour. I was secretly grateful but too embarrassed to accept. Besides, I was getting off at the next stop.
With this newfound confidence I decided I should try do more and the best way to do this was to stop my care package and then I’d have no choice but to do everything myself. As if reading my mind, Waltham Forest social services rang me to see how I was and I asked them to stop the care worker help I was receiving. Today was my last day with assistance.
On Wednesday night we had a freak thunderstorm in Walthamstow that sounded like it was right over the roof of the bungalow where I live. We have electronic security gates but the storm fried the circuit and now they don’t open automatically and we don’t know if anyone is ringing the bell.
I bust my toe because I was rushing to go open the gates manually for someone early the next morning and kicked the corner of a kitchen cabinet so hard that I fell. Today, Friday 13th, my toe is swollen and hurts more than when I first injured myself.
I think I’ve had all the freakish accidents I can cope with in one week.
